Why you need a vignette

The short version: if you leave the town, you pay the road tax.

It is compulsory

Since 2019 the road tax in Bulgaria is paid as an e-vignette. Without one you are not allowed on the tolled network, not even for a few kilometres.

Which vehicles

Cars, SUVs, vans and motorhomes up to 3.5 t. Above that weight the toll is charged per kilometre. Motorcycles are exempt.

Which roads

Every motorway and every national road. Streets inside towns stay free - but you will not reach the seaside on them.

Towing a trailer

If the car and the trailer together go over 3.5 t, the trailer needs its own vignette, on its own plate. You can add it in the same order.

What happens if you drive without one

No patrol will stop you. A camera will.

The check is fully automatic. Fixed gantries and mobile ANPR cameras read every registration plate on the tolled network and compare it against the official register, second by second. There is no roadside control to get past and no place where the network is not watched.

If the plate has no valid vignette, the fine follows. It reaches you at the address the vehicle is registered at, or at the border on your way out. Paying it does not cover the road tax: you still need a vignette to keep driving.

Beyond the motorways, the vignette covers every first, second and third class national road - practically any road with a number on it, between towns.

What the vignette does not cover

  • Streets inside towns and villages - those are free.
  • The Danube bridges at Ruse and Vidin, tolled at the crossing.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, if you drive on a motorway or on a national road. Every vehicle up to 3.5 t needs a valid e-vignette from the moment it enters the tolled network. Only streets inside towns and local roads are free.

We register it as soon as your payment goes through, usually within minutes. You can set the start date for today or for a later day - the vignette opens at the beginning of the day you chose, and the 1-day vignette at the time you chose.

An email with the proof that the road tax has been paid for your plate, as a PDF, and the exact validity period. There is nothing to print and nothing to collect - the vignette lives in the official register, tied to the registration plate.

Write to us immediately, at contact@vinietabg.ro. As long as we have not registered the vignette yet, we correct it at no cost. Once it is registered, the plate can no longer be changed: the vignette belongs to the number it was issued on, and a new one has to be bought. The only exception is a technical error of up to three characters, which the Bulgarian authority may correct on request. This is why we show you the plate once more, in large print, before you continue.

No. Bulgaria dropped the paper sticker in 2019. The vignette is an entry in the official register, linked to your plate, and the cameras read the plate.

Yes, when the car and the trailer together go over 3.5 t. Bulgarian law then treats the trailer as a vehicle of its own, with its own vignette on its own plate. Tick the trailer option in the configurator and we register both at once.

Motorcycles are exempt in Bulgaria: they owe no road tax and need no vignette.

Vehicles over 3.5 t do not use vignettes. They pay a distance-based toll, bought per route. We do not handle those yet.

Yes. Pick the start date in the configurator, up to 30 days ahead. The validity is written under the field, so you see exactly when the period opens and closes before you pay.

Until we register the vignette, yes - use the withdrawal form or write to us, and we refund you in full. Afterwards the road tax has been paid to the Bulgarian state in your name and cannot be recovered, which is why at checkout you expressly ask us to register the vignette immediately.

Because you pay for two different things. The road tax is exactly what the Bulgarian state charges - we do not mark it up. On top of it sits our service fee: we register the vignette in your name, we advance the tax, we check your data and we answer in Romanian when something goes wrong. You can always pay the tax yourself on bgtoll.bg, and for some people that is the better choice.
